I have not posted on my blog in a long time. Life has been very busy. But it should not be too busy for stories. So I am catching you up with some storytelling news. 

October 29 I was able to do a program of scary and fun stories for a Halloween party. SO fun!

Then I got the chance to tell the story The Boy Who Drew Cats at the Skyline Screamers event held in October by the Houston Storytelling Guild in a park on Heights Blvd. I loved hearing some great stories.

Some wonderful storytelling opportunities are coming up. One is the Menlo Park Storytelling Festival finale performance online. With storytellers for different states and countries, it is a wonderful time of stories sharing. And I am excited to be telling a story. To sign up, go to

Also the Houston Storytelling Guild will be having a storytelling concert on Thursday November 16. Join the fun with some wonderful tellers.

Winter Holiday Storytelling Concert!  Saturday, November 16, 7-9 pm.  Join HSG tellers at the Women’s Institute, 2202 Avalon, for an evening of stories for adults and older kids.  
The concert is pay as you like.

Touch of the Master's Hand

Sharing stories with students

I realize I have not written in this blog in a while. Life gets busy and I forget I have it.
I was able to do a program of storytelling last week for a middle school GTA class. The students are  studying storytelling, with the goal of developing a story to tell to younger students.
How fun it was to share my storytelling experiences and then share a few different stories. I did a flannelboard story of The Enormous Turnip that some of them also helped me act out. And they helped with sound effects for the story It Could Always Be Worse. Other stories I included were The Runaway Wok and Two Bear Cubs, along with my version of The Frog Prince, which included my frog puppet.
I don't do as much storytelling outside the library as I would like, but I always love the opportunity when it comes.

I also told The Boy who Drew Cats last Saturday at the Skyline Screamers event in the Heights. Several scary stories were told and it was great! I am glad I didn't miss it!

I will next be telling stories at Providence Classical School in Spring on Monday Oct. 29. I was able to tell to the younger children last year and I am excited to go again. With stories about fall, harvest and animals, it should be fun for all attending.

I did a program of stories last Tuesday at Menlo Park Public Library. The audience of kids and adults was great and I told a variety of folk tales, along with my personal story about my favorite dog Albert. Take a look at the pictures!

Storytelling this summer

 I hope you had a great summer. I had a busy one, moving to a smaller place and getting unpacked. 

But I was also able to do some storytelling. In July I did a program of scary stories to Tweens at the Conroe Main Library. That was really fun, with a good group of tweens and parents.

In August I was part of the Vacation Bible School at Pines Presbyterian Church in Houston. Each day my puppet Sam and I told a story from the Bible related to PEACE. I loved the kids and adults and I think they liked me too, or at least liked Sam. He even gave a bunch of the kids High 5's that last day. :-)

Storyteller Leona Hoegsberg

Stories from the Bookworm 

 Armed with a great imagination and a dramatic flair, Leona Hoegsberg has told stories to children and adults for more than 30 years.  Leona calls her storytelling “Stories from the Bookworm” because of her love and knowledge of great children’s literature. From this literature Leona has built a repertoire of stories from around the world- folktales, fairytales, myths, poetry and more. All the stories are infused with dramatic movement and voice and lots of energy, to make the stories come alive for audiences. 

Leona has told stories in California, Texas, and other states, performing at libraries, schools, festivals, museums and birthday parties. Recently she has been seen at Children’s Museum of Houston, The Woodlands Children’s Museum, Bush Elementary School, and Central Library- Conroe. Her experience working with children of all ages as a teacher and librarian has helped her to design a storytelling program appropriate for the age and interest of each group.

Dixie Swim Club at Playhouse 1960

While I love to tell stories, I do it in many ways. One of them is by acting in plays and musicals. This past weekend I opened in Dixie Swim Club at Playhouse 1960 in Spring TX, near Highway 249 and Willowbrook Mall. Playing Vernadette Simms, I am one of five ladies from a college swim team that get together every August to swim and talk and help each other. Last weekend I was part of a concert sponsored by the Houston Storytelling Guild. I shared the stage with storytellers Sally Bates Goodroe, David Claunch, Alan Gardiner- Atkinson, Andrew Gass, and Sheila Stark Phillips. While the audiences were rather small this time, other storytelling concerts will be coming and if you like storytelling, please make sure to go. The venue, the new Company OnStage location, was great. I told the stories Two Bear Cubs and It Could Always Be Worse. All the stories had an animal theme and it was fun to tell and fun to listen. :-)

Stories at Skyline Screamers

This Saturday Oct. 28 at 7pm, the Houston Storytelling Guild will be hosting the Skyline Screamers, It will be an evening of scary stories to delight and frighten, in honor of Halloween. I will be a
storyteller, along with many other Houston favorites. It will be held at Marmion Park on Heights Blvd. Come join the fun!!

Acting in My Fair Lady

In addition to my storytelling, I also enjoy acting. This month I have the privilege to be in the musical production of My Fair Lady at the Crighton Theatre in Conroe. Playing Mrs Pearce the housekeeper, I have had fun on stage with great actors Michael R. Martin, Sara Preisler, and Jim King. And I have also had fun offstage helping with moving the desk, setting up tea services and making sure Eliza is in the right costume. The show runs through February 26.

Using Drama and Storytelling for God

Thank you for viewing my blog. Most of the information has been about storytelling, both mine and other opportunities to see it being done, and about children's books.
But I also wanted to mention my passion for Drama and Storytelling for God. I love telling Biblical stories and especially presenting Biblical and Christian women through drama. The picture shows me as Mary Magdalene, a program I have done at my Life Group at Champion Forest Baptist Church and a couple of other places. I love to bring these women to life and let them share their love for God through drama with an audience. If you know of a ladies group or church who would be interested, please let me know. Thanks.

Feedback from my storytelling program at Central Library inConroe

This summer, I had such a lovely time performing a program of stories and songs at the Central Library in Conroe. Alicia and Laura were so nice and I felt very welcome. 
They did give me some feedback on my performance that is quoted below:
